Hong Kong

The flag of Hong Kong, officially the territorial flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, depicts a white stylized five-petalled Hong Kong orchid tree (Bauhinia blaccaena) flower in the center of a Chinese red field. Its original design was unveiled at the third session of the Seventh National People’s Congress on 4 April 1990.[1] [2] The current design was approved at the fourth meeting of the Preparatory Committee of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 10 August 1996. The precise use of the flag is governed by laws passed by the 58th Executive Meeting of the State Council, held in Beijing.[4] The flag’s design is enshrined in the Basic Law of Hong Kong, the territory’s constitutional document,[5] and prohibits the flag’s use. The rules regarding ensigns and construction are set out in the Regional Flag and Regional Emblem Ordinance. 6] The flag of Hong Kong was officially adopted and hoisted on 1 July 1997 during the handover ceremony marking the transfer of sovereignty from the United Kingdom to China.

Macau

The flag of Macau, officially the regional flag of the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China Portuguese: Bandeira Regional da Regio Administrativa Especial de Macau), is a light green stylized governor. Lotus flower and water in white above the Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, below a circular arch of five golden five-pointed stars: a large star in the center of the arch and two smaller stars on each side of the large star, each with one point which make angles directly outward from the center of the common circle on which they lie.

The lotus was chosen as the floral emblem of Macau. The Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge is a bridge connecting the Macau Peninsula and Taipa Island. The bridge is one of the most recognizable landmarks for the area. The lotus and the water beneath the bridge symbolize Macau’s status as a port and the role it played in the region. The five five-pointed stars mirror the design of the flag of the People’s Republic of China, symbolizing Macau’s relationship with its sovereign statehood.

According to the Basic Law of Macau, the Macau regional flag is a green flag with five stars, a lotus flower, a bridge and sea water. This law also adopted “In addition to displaying the flag of the People’s Republic of China, the Macao Special Administrative Region may also use a regional flag”.
