Find an ancient helmet in a burial mound in Croatia.

Inside an Illyrian burial mound, archaeologists in Croatia have uncovered a 2,500-year- ancient helmet that represents a significant scientific advance.

According to scientists, the helmet might have been used in a religious ritual intended to instill “awe in the enemy.”

The helmet was discovered in a stone construction inside a burial mound at the Gomile archaeological site. It is thought to have been worn somewhere between the sixth and fourth centuries BC.
The site is close to the Adriatic Sea, close to the settlement of Zakotorac, and contains several burial mounds.

Leading the excavation is University of Zagreb archeology professor Hrvoje Potrebica, who wrote an email to Live Science stating, “Each mound [contains] multiple graves and each grave contains multiple burials.”

According to Ancient Greek texts, the Illyrians were a prosperous group of Indo-European speakers who lived in the area about the time the helmet was produced.

After being split up into several tribes and kingdoms, the Illyrians were ultimately subjugated by the Romans in conflicts that took place between 300 and 100 BC.
Although the recently discovered helmet “seems to be in perfect condition,” Potrebica added that conservation work will still need to be done.

Potrebica stated that as the helmet was discovered far from the graves within the burial mound, it was probably meant to be a votive offering “to deceased ancestors or part of some cult practice related to the whole mound and not a particular individual or a grave.”

Domagoj Perkic, the director of the Archeological Museum, who is overseeing the excavation, suggested that another possibility is that the helmet was worn in combat to psychologically affect the adversary.

Perkic continued: “Just try to imagine a warrior with a shiny [helmet] on his head, in the sun, on the eve of a battleā€¦that moment alone causes awe in the enemy.”

This is related to the recent discovery by Egyptian experts of the remnants of a 3,500-year-old ancient Egyptian “royal retreat.”

The refuge is believed to have been one of the royal residences that housed both royalty and ancient Egyptian warriors close to the Eastern Gate of Egypt.
