Some days I don’t feel like cooking and other days I’m late. Whatever the reason, sometimes a quick bite for breakfast is just what the doctor ordered.
We set out to determine which company offers the greatest rendition of the traditional breakfast dish, the sausage, egg and cheese sandwich, because we believe small meals should also be delicious. We checked out and rated these Chicago fast-food restaurants:
- Burger King
- Chick-fil-A
- Dunkin’
- McDonald’s
- Panera
- Starbucks
- Wendy’s
The best breakfast sandwiches, we ordered 7 from fast food.
7. Burger King
When it comes to quick and easy breakfast options, Burger King is undoubtedly the best option. In my opinion, their croissant breakfast sandwich was on the small side and came in a very crumpled to-go bag. Although the service was fast, I thought the eggs were too thin (probably because most fast-food eggs aren’t made with whole eggs). The sausage patty, like many of the sandwiches we tried, seemed to lack flavor.
In summary, although their burger was not my favorite of the fast food breakfast options, Burger King was undoubtedly the fastest.
6. Dunkin’
Dunkin’ offers three bread options for sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches: croissant, bagel or English muffin. The bread option for the sandwich sounded great to me. Since the drive-thru menu only included pictures of croissants, I decided to go with that choice. In my case, some of the thinner ends were too burnt and felt overdone. I’ll keep that in mind next time because it’s probably better to choose a Dunkins bagel or an English muffin. The sandwich overall was not particularly noteworthy among others.
In summary, I’m a huge fan of Dunkin’ for their coffee and donuts, so I’ll probably go with their breakfast sandwiches.
McDonald’s
McDonald’s breakfast sandwiches didn’t taste as good as I remembered them. Although I’m aware they’ve changed some of their recipes over time, I remember they used to be much tastier. The sausage patty seems to be the primary difference. A perfectly prepared sausage patty is just as important in a breakfast sandwich as a tasty hamburger patty on a Big Mac. Although they are reasonably priced and I enjoy how convenient it is to visit McDonald’s, I wish the original recipe could be recreated.
In summary, McDonald’s provides a convenient breakfast option, but you can also make a delicious McDonald’s Egg McMuffin at home.
4. Wendy’s
Like other fast-food restaurants, Wendy’s serves its sandwiches on biscuit buns. Examining the bread, egg, and sausage patties in their respective categories, I couldn’t identify a particularly tasty ingredient. It’s rumored that Wendy’s is aggressively trying to grow and expand their morning menu, so I think there’s still room for growth.
In summary, I found that Wendy’s is more about their famous frosty and delicious fries than their morning sandwiches.
3. Panera
Panera has breakfast sandwiches that taste fresh and are available on ciabatta or brioche buns. For this taste test, I decided to use ciabatta bread. The sandwich was filling, but I think the brioche bun would have been a better choice next time. It’s worth noting that even though this sandwich was the most expensive breakfast, it was also very important, so it makes sense if you’re really cranky in the morning.
In summary, although this was a delicious choice, its ciabatta bread and price prevented it from being the highest quality sandwich.
2. Chick-fil-A
The bread of the Chick-fil-Morning sandwich is particularly noteworthy. The biscuits were very tasty and had a handmade taste, which I loved. The cheese tasted authentic rather than made up and the eggs were light and fluffy. If the sausage patty was more flavorful and seasoned, this might have won. This sandwich was a close second because of that one thing.
In summary, this is a good option for breakfast if you want a biscuit bun sandwich. Chick-fil-A also has chicken, egg and cheese biscuits on the hidden menu that you can order.
1. Starbucks
Finally, the Starbucks breakfast consisting of sausage, eggs and cheese was far superior to the others. It totally caught me off guard! I had always assumed that Starbucks’ food selection was, well, not that great for a shop known for its drinks. The sausage patty was the piece de resistance that really elevated this sandwich to a whole new level. This sausage stands out among the bland choices as it is flavored with herbs often found in breakfast sausages.
In summary, you’re already in for a coffee. Be sure to grab this winner for your morning meal!
