2023: Onam Story

According to Hindu mythology, King Mahabali was a benevolent monarch of Kerala. During his rule, the kingdom was affluent and peaceful. The people of the kingdom were content and adored their monarch. Deities, the opponent of demons, desired to terminate Mahabali’s authority on Earth. They were envious of him when he vanquished them to become king. Lord Vishnu was sent to King Mahabali.

Lord Vishnu assumed the shape of Vamana Avatar (Brahmin) and went to King Mahabali to test him, asking for three feet of land. He consented, therefore Lord Vishnu traversed all the worlds in two steps before asking for a location for his third stride. King Mahabali asked Vamana to place his third foot on his head, transporting him to the netherworld. Lord Vishnu, on the other hand, was pleased by his dedication and kindness. Lord Vishnu bestowed upon King Mahabali the ability to visit his realm (Kerala) once a year. As a result, the people of Kerala celebrate the Onam festival as the return of their beloved king Mahabali.
