What if you were walking along the beach and saw thousands of blue creatures washed up on the shore? It will look like a scene from a sci-fi movie, right? Well, believe it or not, a sea of tiny blue creatures has washed up on the coast of Southern California. Known as Velella Vela or By-the-Wind Sailors, these creatures are ‘jellyfish cousins’ that live in the ocean.
Point Reyes National Seashore officials reported in a Facebook post, “Velella velella are flat, oval-shaped hydroid polyps (cousins of jellyfish) that live in the open ocean but are often seen washing up on beaches at Point Reyes National Seashore. During the spring and early summer months When strong winds push them ashore.” He further wrote, “They have a strong and straight triangular sail attached to their body which allows them to be caught by the wind and float on the surface of the water, giving them their name ‘bai. -The-Wind Sailor.’ Don’t worry about those little blue tentacles hanging from their bodies! These tentacles do not sting humans But they will collect a lot of zooplankton or fish eggs to eat.”
