Alarms Raised After Dead Fish Is Unexpectedly Found in California Lake

Following the discovery of dead fish floating in a California drinking water reservoir, officials have begun testing the area.

On Wednesday night, the Lake Elsinore & San Jacinto Watersheds Authority (LESJWA) declared that it has begun looking into the oxygen levels at Canyon Lake. According to the LESJWA website, the reservoir in southern California has historically seen algal blooms, which can raise environmental issues.

“A fish die-off, is one of the first visible signs of environmental stress when dead fish are found floating on the surface of water or washed up on the shore,” stated a statement. “The most common cause of a fish die-off is the depletion of dissolved oxygen in a body of water.”

The possibility that the fish die-off or the algae could affect the drinking water’s quality was not addressed.

Newsweek called the LESJWA to request a statement.

“Fish kills are caused by naturally occurring conditions including algae, weather, low lake levels and abundance of carp/shad,” said the statement.

“The San Jacinto Watershed provides Canyon Lake with nitrogen and phosphorus, which algae use to flourish. Algae, like other green plants, produce oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis during the day.

Nevertheless, the algae cease producing oxygen and begin to produce carbon dioxide when the amount of light decreases, the water temperature rises, or the nutrients are depleted. They soon start taking in more oxygen than they are exhaling .”This may potentially cause a die-off in the algal bloom, which would suffocate the fish by lowering oxygen levels in the lake and causing bacterial decomposition.”
According to the LESJWA website, Canyon Lake is vulnerable to algal blooms due to its location at the end of the watershed.

This indicates that the lake receives a lot of nutrients from upstream water runoff, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which algae eat.

The webpage for the lake stated, “These nutrients encourage algae growth.”

To stop the growth, water officials put alum, a chemical substance, into the water.

“Alum instantly attaches itself to the phosphorus in the water, neutralizing and inactivating it. According to the website, the alum method was selected as a way to enhance lake quality since it has been shown to be successful in lakes around the nation.
“LESJWA has been responsible for organizing the alum treatments, which have proven to be successful in minimizing algae growth.”
