Do you ever feel like everything you do is tidy and clutter-free? No matter how big your room is, having a clean and organized area becomes more difficult because it feels like all our “stuff” just takes over.
The key to a neat, tidy area is simple: have fewer items that require maintenance and take up space.
Here are 12 HouseHold items you won’t want to miss and can definitely partake in!
1. Ironing Board
Your mother (or grandmother, as the case may be) probably stood at the ironing board for long hours, carefully ironing a large stack of laundry. I’ll also bet you rarely iron. Nowadays, ironing has largely become obsolete due to the introduction of wrinkle-free fabrics and the overall trend of our culture towards less formality. Even if you only iron from time to time, all you have to do is place a towel on your counter or table and use it in place of a large ironing board.
2. Draining Board
When I first moved into my house, we had a draining board to hold wet dishes. But I quickly learned that those bulky boards take up a ton of counter space when not in use and under the sink. Begin drying the pots immediately and discard the draining board in the trash. After placing a fresh dishtowel or absorbent dishmat on the counter, immediately transfer your damp dish to it. Then, you can throw the mats or towels in the washing machine for a cleaner and more compact experience.
3. Apple Corer
This is true of any specialist cutting tool, but the Apple Corer takes up a lot of space in your drawer and closes frequently, making it difficult to access the basic blades you need. Use a standard knife to cut apples if necessary; This will save you a ton of room and it’s not too hard.
4. Herb Scissors
I’d be willing to say you don’t use your herb scissors unless you’re a really sophisticated chef and use them all the time. This indicates that your drawer is not well organized because the scissors are taking up significant drawer space. Should some herbs be pruned? Use a kitchen knife or multi-purpose scissors.
5. Fancy Knives
Same idea as the last piece of advice. Most of us are not gourmet cooks. Even if we buy or receive a large set of knives as gifts, we rarely use most of them. We only use a small number of knives; Others are just storage items. I understand that “breaking a set” can be difficult, but remove the other knife if not necessary!
6. Alarm Clock
In the past, no bedroom was complete without an alarm clock. But these days, most of us only use our phone to check the clock and set the alarm in the middle of the night. All your alarm clocks are taking up space on your nightstand. Instead, toss the clock on the donation pile and enjoy your new clean and uncluttered home!
7. Popcorn Maker
Have you always decided to buy fresh popcorn after finding a popcorn maker on sale? Well, it’s a nutritious breakfast! Your clean, tidy kitchen is getting in the way of a large appliance taking up room. Instead, make popcorn in a heavy saucepan. Save yourself valuable cabinet space and it will taste just as amazing, if not better!
8. Deep Fryer
oh no I believe someone was tricked into buying a deep fryer around the holidays. The problem with deep fryers is that they take up a lot of space and worse, they encourage deep frying! Get rid of that deep fryer; Both your waistline and your cabinet space will thank you for it! If the situation arises when deep frying is required, just use a large, heavy pot. (Noticing the pattern yet?)
9. Cookbooks
Even though I have tons of cookbooks, I always seem to come back to my tried and trusted favorites. Whenever I want to try something new, I usually get an idea from a blog or other online piece I read, or from a friend or family member who sends me a tip. In short, you could use shelf space for something and your cookbook collection is definitely gathering dust. Just take pictures of the recipes you use, save them digitally, and give the cookbooks to someone else to read to enjoy!
10. Stemmed Wine Glasses
These fragile wine glasses break easily, are not really necessary and are difficult to store. Additionally, I find that they frequently don’t fit properly in the dishwasher—a deal-breaker! Stemless water glasses work just as well, unless you’re a real wine enthusiast. Invest in some good ones and give stemless wine to a connoisseur who will use them and value them.
11. Throw Pillows on Your Bed
Yes, I am aware of that. It’s tempting to arrange your bed to look like a high-end magazine spread. However, all those pillows are just things that get in the way of restful sleep! They make your bed harder because they often wind up on the ground. Aim for a minimal aesthetic (you can even get a nice set of linens if you want!) and avoid using too many pillows.
12. Chip Clips
Although they don’t require a lot of room, they can get expensive! Moreover, they are more than necessary. Alternatively, use binder clips. They are usually less expensive, take up less space, and have a variety of uses, including organizing cords. Say goodbye to chip clips and organize your closet!
