A groundbreaking hydro storage system will be constructed by RheEnergise.
At Sibelco’s mining operations at Cornwood, near Plymouth, Devon, UK-based hydro-energy storage business RheEnergise will construct a first-of-its-kind demonstrator of its long-duration hydro-energy storage system. With a September commissioning date set, the demonstrator’s construction is expected to commence shortly.
With a 500kW maximum power output, RheEnergise’s HD Hydro demonstration will help Sibelco decarbonize its operations and support its mining activities during periods of high energy demand. Kaolin is produced at the Cornwood location primarily for use in industrial applications, ceramics, tiles, and sanitary ware.
The Longer Duration Energy Storage (LODES) Demonstration Program of the UK government is funding the project.
RheEnergise asserts that the UK’s growth in renewable power generation depends on the implementation of long-duration energy storage devices.
“We are extremely appreciative of the support and assistance given to us by Sibelco, the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero, and Devon County Council,” stated Stephen Crosher, CEO of RheEnergise. Our plan will support Sibelco’s energy security at Cornwood and demonstrate the long-term impact it can have on the business’s efforts to achieve net-zero emissions.
“The demonstration is a game-changing initiative for the LDES industry and will put us in a great position to develop large-scale projects both domestically and internationally. Our technology has attracted interest from all over the world, including Australia and Chile. Within two years, we hope to have our first 10 MW grid-scale plant operational,” he continued.
