I guess once you start checking your blood sugar, sometimes you have to learn the hard way—and with these nine things I never imagined would spike my blood sugar, that’s what happened to me.
Gluten-free Processed Foods
After eating a good meal at a gluten-free restaurant, I had the biggest sugar spike. The root of the problem was a coating made using gluten-free flour. Processed goods labeled as gluten-free may be so refined to remove gluten from wheat that all fiber is removed, which can cause blood sugar to spike.
Sauces
BBQ season is fast approaching, so staying away from most sauces and condiments is recommended to be cautious. Excellent mustards and salad dressings are still available, including vinegar, oil and herbs. Many spices contain hidden sugars that can cause sudden spikes in your blood sugar levels.
Dried Fruit
Although dried fruit may seem like a healthy snack if you don’t have any problems with high blood sugar, it’s actually high in sugar. Choose fresh fruit instead of dried fruit because the former’s natural sugar content can raise blood sugar levels more significantly. If you still want to enjoy them, eat them with natural yogurt to slow down their growth.
Sweet Potato Fries
Don’t swap your regular fries for sweet potato fries if you do because they will help you control your sugar levels. Sorry to tell you, but they won’t. These are almost identical in terms of raising our glucose levels, so pick whichever one you want, it won’t make much of a difference!
Sweetened Nut Butters
Sweetened nut butters may contain added sugars that reduce their beneficial effects. When it comes to your general health and, in this case, your blood sugar levels, the best option is to choose nut butters that have no additives or make your own at home.
Coffee, Even without Sugar
When I was originally told I had type 2 diabetes, the first thing they wanted me to do was tell them that drinking black coffee without sugar raises blood sugar. This is because some individuals are very sensitive to caffeine, which can cause morning blood sugar spikes.
Gummy Vitamins
However, they are vitamins. Yes, but they can definitely raise blood sugar. Since these vitamins are high in sugar, they are more fun to consume. Obviously, the tastier the vitamin, the more likely you are to buy a particular brand. I once heard that a vitamin is good for you if it tastes bad, and I’m starting to believe it! Plus, increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables will undoubtedly boost your vitamin levels.
Sugar-Free Food
Unfortunately, items labeled as sugar-free do not necessarily indicate that they are free of carbohydrates or saturated fat. Other ingredients in sugar-free meals can affect your blood sugar levels. Most of them also contain malitol, which can be uncomfortable and cause swelling.
Seasonings
While preparing our recipes, we must consider the high carb content of certain spices like onion, chili and garlic powder. Some mix condiments, such as fajita mix, also include sugar as one of their primary ingredients. Always check the sugar and carb content on the label.
