The Wolf and the Shepherd Boy

The Wolf and the Shepherd Boy

Shepherd

A Shepherd boy was tending his master’s sheep in the shade of a gloomy forest near the village. Life on the ranch quickly became boring for him. All he could do to pass the time was play with his shepherd’s pipe or converse with his dog.

One day he was sitting observing the sheep and the quiet forest when he got an idea for a funny diversion. He was also thinking about what he would do if he saw a wolf. His master instructed the villagers to warn the wolf if it attacked the herd and they would chase it. Now, “Wolf! Wolf!” Even as he ran towards the settlement at the top of his lungs, he hadn’t seen anything remotely resembling a wolf.

He knew that when they heard the call, the villagers would drop what they were doing and rush to the pasture with great excitement. Upon arrival, they find the boy laughing uncontrollably at his own deception. After a few days “Wolf! Wolf!” Shepherd Boy shouted once more. The villagers rushed to help him again, but this time they were rebuffed.

One evening, as the sun began to set behind the trees and shadows appeared on the pasture, a wolf actually came out of the pasture and attacked the sheep.

The boy screamed, “Wolf! Wolf!” as he fled screaming into the settlement. Despite hearing the call, the Villagers refrained from rushing to aid him, unlike their previous behavior. “He can’t trick us once more,” they declared.

After killing a large number of the boy’s sheep, the wolf disappeared into the forest.

Moral of the story: Even if you’re telling the truth, no one will believe you if you keep lying. Always speak the truth.
