Kollywood star Suriya’s ambitious period action-fantasy drama, Kanguva, is one of the most eagerly awaited biggies of this year. Suriya and the film’s team promoted the movie across the country. Amid unprecedented hype, the Siva directorial has finally made it to theaters worldwide this morning.

Story

Francis (Suriya) is a bounty hunter. He has a formidable competitor in his ex-girlfriend (Disha Patani). One day, Francis bumps into a boy in Goa, following which he remembers his bond with the boy in his past life. The movie then heads to a period dating back to several centuries. Who is Kanguva? What does he do to protect his clan? Why did the Kanguva clan clash with the other clans?

Plus Points

Bollywood actress Disha Patani does justice to her leading lady’s role. She impresses the youths in an ultra-glamorous avatar. Bollywood actor Bobby Deol also comes up with a solid performance. His character has a lot of depth, and Bobby does an impressive job in his role that has been made a fitting nemesis to Suriya’s Kanguva character by director Siva.

Minus Points

On the whole, director Siva, who designed some spectacular action scenes (especially in the climax) along with the main theme that he wanted to narrate, couldn’t match the pace in the rest of the scenes. While there is enough scope to make those scenes more interesting, Siva dilutes the overall impact by focusing more on highlighting the emotional drama.

Technical Aspects

Cinematographer Vetri Palaniswami’s visuals standout as one of the major highlights of Kanguva. Along with the crucial scenes in the movie, the rest of the action scenes were shot beautifully in accordance with the story and the period setting. Editing by Nishad Yusuf is also quite impressive. The songs composed by music director Devi Sri Prasad are decent, and their picturization is particularly good.

Verdict

Kanguva is a period action and emotional drama that features some impressive action sequences and emotional scenes. Especially Suriya’s power-packed performance, the surprising elements in the climax, and top-notch technical standards by the team make Kanguva a high-quality magnum opus.
