Chennai Rain Update: Considering flood-like situations in the state, the Tamil Nadu government announced a holiday for schools and Colleges across four northern districts- Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Chengelpet on Wednesday, October 16.
“Under its influence, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu on 16th October. Given the above, the Government has decided to declare a Public Holiday tomorrow,” stated the chief minister’s office.
However, the essential services including, Police, Fire Service, hospitals, Medical services, local bodies, transports etc, will be functional. “All shops and other commercial establishments shall function as usual,” the CMO office stated.
On Tuesday, the government advised IT sector employees to work from home between October 15 and 18. This came after the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issued a red alert for several districts along with Chennai.
Heavy rain continued to lash in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu since Tuesday, causing knee-deep water logging on the roads of several residential neighborhoods which lead to traffic congestion.
Due to which, the public transport service was severely affected. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alert for the parts of the state warning very heavy rainfall between October 17 and October 18.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated, “The depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today,
the16th October 2024 over the same region near latitude 12.1° N and longitude 83.4°E, about 360 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 390 km east of Puducherry and 450 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh).
It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu – South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of 17th October.”
