Pokemon players love the Dragon-type, which is usually one of the strongest pairings on any team. These Pokemon are difficult to train and often evolve in the later levels of the game. Trainers are given extremely powerful creatures with equally amazing looks, so it’s worth the wait.

Dragon-type Pokémon are somewhat more uncommon than other types in the Pokémon universe. And the fact that their designs are often influenced by ancient beasts that once ruled the planet or mythical creatures from around the world only shows how amazing they are.

Top rated dragon-type pokemon

Noivern

Noivern, also known as the Sound Wave Pokémon, has a dragon-like body with draconic bat-like claws and wings. The characteristic red markings on the face, the large ears of the long-eared bat, and the shape of the fruit bat share many similarities with species such as the leaf-nosed bat.

The Pokédex article in SHIELD states that they use their speaker-shaped ears to mimic the ultrasonic powers of bats and repel enemies by weakening them with “rock-crushing ultrasonic waves”.

Dragonair

Dragonair’s serpentine appearance is based on its Dratini pre-evolutionary theme, which ties in with the mythology surrounding dragons in Korea. These “gigantic land snakes” known as imugi eventually “transform into true dragons” but this requires “time and patience”. This makes sense given its dramatic evolutionary leap to dragonite, whose evolutionary history is almost entirely unrelated to that of dratini or dragonite.

Dragonair, a Pokémon that appears in Pokédex entries as a mysterious creature, has pearl-like ornaments on its neck and tail and two wings on the side of its head that resemble the Greek god Hermes.

Kommo-o

Although Kommo-o is a terrestrial dragon, his body is covered in plated scales that compensate for his lack of wings. This dragon/fighting-type exudes strength, as evidenced by its oversized claws and size. The Pokédex article in his Moon states that the armored scales “function as offense and defense,” which is the sole basis for the design.

The pangolin-like armor plates and reptilian shape of the kommo-o are evocative of the mo’o, described in Hawaiian mythology as “a large creature with a long and formidable body.”

Goodra

Goodra, covered in mud, would have looked good in a double poison type. Rather, these Pokemon are simply called Dragon Pokemon. Although Goodra’s design lacks many rigid elements, it can be modeled after Lou Carcolh of French mythology. The four stalks on its head and its coiled tail complete the description of this “monstrous snail-like creature”.

Goodra is incredibly powerful even though his appearance suggests he should be submissive. According to the Pokédex entry in Violet, Goodra is “uncontrollable when enraged” and “slaps its tail with enough force to send a dump truck flying”.

Haxorus

The projecting tusks of Haxaurus’ pre-evolution Axe have evolved into full-grown battle axes, earning it the name “Axy Jaw Pokémon”. With its effortless looks, this intimidatingly aggressive Pokemon draws players’ attention to its main weapon of choice—its tusks. The Haxaurus is also pleased with them, calling them his “pride and joy” and keeping them alive by eating minerals from the earth.

The University of California, Berkeley states that Haxaurus’ structure is reminiscent of that of a dinosaur, namely Heterodontosaurus, which “had three types of teeth capable of biting, tearing and grinding.”

Roaring Moon

A primitive Paradox Pokémon first seen in Roaring Moon, Scarlet is said to be the ancestor of Salmons. Dragon/Dark-type Pokémon take the effect of Mega Evolution, as shown by its continuous wing expansion and crescent form. Feathers now have two shades of feathers, probably in reference to the idea that dinosaurs had feathers.

The appearance of the Roaring Moon is closely related to its wings, which make it the pinnacle of Salamons. Although the original form is quite stylish, the wings have always been somewhat inadequate, being too low to support the large frame. It is undoubtedly better than the Mega Evolve variant, although it is still somewhat enhanced.

Flygon

The Flygon’s design is a play on its name, imitating a dragonfly in a reptile. The tail is about the same length as the wings, which have the subtle structure of a dragonfly. Although the design relies heavily on draconic elements, the translucent red orbs over Flygon’s eyes give it insect-like characteristics.

As described in the FireRed and LeafGreen Pokédex entries, Flygon is a desert-dwelling Pokémon, and these red orbs protect it from the sand that swirls around it. It is strange, because it hides itself in the sand when it is a light green color rather than beige or light brown.

Drampa

Drampa’s name suggests an old-looking dragon with its white, wispy fur, and the creature’s design exudes wisdom and pleasant vibes. However, avoid developing any prerequisites because, as stated in its Pokédex page in SHIELD, when enraged it “raises a storm and flattens everything around it”.

Drampa has the most classic Chinese dragon design of all dragon types. It is especially closely related to the Zhulong Dragon, which is revered as a god in Chinese mythology. Although these dragons are usually red, Drampa has a pastel green and yellow color scheme to reflect the environment of his Alolan home.

Mega Garchomp

A lucky few were granted a Mega Evolved form, with the semi-famous Garchomp getting a makeover in X & Y. Garchomp’s design is excellent and has long been a fan favorite. However, his Mega Evolution goes a step further and increases this. His arms become jagged sickle-shaped wings, and a greater number of thorns emerge from his body and focus on his chest.

Mega Garchomp looks both terrifying and painful, a fact reinforced by the Pokédex article in Ultra Sun, which suggests that “its arms and wings” were melted into sickles by the “excess energy” of Mega Evolution. The rest of Garchomp’s look has been drastically altered, with his mouth protruding more and his shark-like features intensified.

Dragapault

Dragpolt, sometimes referred to as a stealth Pokémon, is the only non-legendary dragon/ghost-type in the entire series. Given that the ancient amphibian Diplocalus is long extinct, the ghost-typing of this hardy Pokemon could be a reference to that long-lost creature. The dragpolt’s tail fades to a ghostly transparency. The Pokédex entry in Scarlet states that it can do this to the entire body if it is focused enough.

Dragpolt’s helmet has chambers that shoot out small draperies like missiles, giving it the appearance of a stealth bomber. But fear not—according to SHIELD’s Pokédex article, this Pokémon loves a challenge and “is eagerly awaiting the launch of Mac Speed.”
